Twitter Shortens Tweets with a URL by 2 Characters

 twitter

People who tweet urls:your tweet is going to get shorter.

Any tweet that includes a url will now be reduced by 2 characters from today. This takes it to 118 characters, or 117 for https links.  This was first announced to the Twitter development community by Twitter in December. It’s just now being implemented and goes live today.

Such change is a result of Twitter’s t.co link wrapper. Since it extends the maximum length of a link wrapped by t.co from 20 to 22 characters for non-https URLs, and from 21 to 23 characters for https lengths, you now have less tweet landscape to work with.

When Twitter users post a link within a tweet, Twitter automatically wraps the link in their own proprietary wrapper (t.co). This happens even if another url shortener is used such as bit.ly and others. Twitter supports this method as they believe it helps keep the Twitter ecosystem safe and helps avoid computer viruses. There are obviously key benefits to them being able to track all urls for watching trends and enabling future monetization on such data in the future.

Usually, MySpace is remain as user friendly as this used to be so there should not really be a plenty of user relevant topic while it comes into this issue. The only concern regarding MySpace but is that it nearly never moderated its platforms in huge scale manner so making this looks such as a little collegial equated to other social media.

Twitter Launching Twitter Stories

Last year, Twitter debuted a marketing campaign, called Twitter Tales, that showcased ways in which users interact with the microblogging platform. The company is launching a similar campaign, called Twitter Stories, which seems to show interesting Tweets and ways the site’s users are communicating via the platform.

For example, Maureen Evans uses Twitter to share recipes with users. Aaron Durand was able to save his mother’s bookstore using Twitter. Well-known film critic Roger Ebert uses Twitter as voice after he lost his voice.

Some stories are even accompanied by videos (embedded below). Users can send their Twitter stories via the hashtag #TwitterStory or by mentioning @twitterstories and Twitter will choose to showcase certain ones.

User stories are always a good marketing tool. Facebook launched a similar marketing campaign around their 500 million users milestone last year, called Facebook Stories. Google also launched Google Stories, which collects stories from users sharing tales about how Google effected their lives.

Twitter Testing Top People

Twitter Top News

Just a few days after users spotted a change in their Twitter.com Timeline, it looks like Twitter’s testing a new feature in its search engine. A few users noticed that when they searched for a news story or a person’s name, a box appeared at the top of the results displaying “Top News” and a popular story about the query, or “Top People” with a link to a relevant person’s Twitter profile. Twitter seems well-qualified to make these editorial decisions based on retweets of stories or followers of particular people, but it also looks primed for that “Promoted” tag Twitter’s growing so fond of. As usual with Twitter, it’s a limited test for only a few users, but look for it in your results soon.
